The story revolves around Kristine Redemurr, a Monster who comes back to her hometown, Hollow Hill, following a call from their childhood friend Dexter Cristata. Dexter explains that he has seen various sigils around Hollow Hill, and one of them, located in the library, has been causing the place to act weird. Upon investigating it, Kristine and Dexter are transported to the PAPER KINGDOM, a HELLSCAPE made from the purpose of the library's various books and objects.
Kristine wakes up to find that she is a child now, and starts looking for Dexter, but she's confronted by The aRanger, who is the right hand of the EMPRESS. She also encounters ZAINT, a SPAWN with no memories who helps her fend off The aRanger. ZAINT explains that its memories are likely hidden somewhere, and offers to help Kristine and Dexter return home safely in return for helping them recover its memories.
Shortly after entering the FIELD OF REFLECTION, the group encounters the shop of MIGUEL, a mysterious cat who explains that everything that gets lost in the kingdom is stored on the Empress' FORTRESS, and that they could likely encounter ZAINT's memories there. The aRanger confronts the party once more, and manipulates Dexter so that he turns on the party. Without Dexter, Kristine and ZAINT battle their way through the ZAPHIRE FOREST, until they confront The aRanger and Dexter.
